The "Mojave" Experiment

A set of people were asked what they think is bad on Windows Vista during the Mojave Experiment. Their answers were recorded.  They were then shown "Microsoft Windows Mojave", a new operating system that impressed everyone.

Microsoft then revealed "Windows Mojave" and "Windows Vista" are the same one.

Why can't Microsoft ship Open Source Software?

These days I've been questioning many people inside Microsoft and I've found an absolutely good answer to it. It's interesting the comparision behind it. Maybe now people can start understanding some points.

You can find the article in (Why Can't Microsoft Ship Open Source Software-) and an interesting complimentary of it is this one in Jon Galloway's blog. Read this interesting excerpt:

"Let's say Microsoft took my advice and shipped Paint.NET as a Windows Vista Ultimate Extra. Unbeknownst to Microsoft - or even the Paint.NET project leads - a project contributor had copied some GPL code and included it in a patch submission (either out of ignorance or as with malice aforethought). Two years later, a competitor runs a binary scan for GPL code and serves Microsoft with a lawsuit for copyright infringement. Microsoft is forced to pay eleventy bajillion dollars and damages. Perhaps even worse, they're hit with an injunction which prevents selling the offending application, which requires recalling shrinkwrapped boxes and working with computer vendors who've got the software pre-installed on computers in their inventory. All for shipping a simple paint program."

Office Registry Keys for RMS

Some of these are a mystery to me, and I haven't had a chance to get into the source to look at them, or have and am in the process of figuring out their use. ;) Use these at your own risk. Anywhere that I have marked that they are available in Office 11, obviously you will need to make adjustments to the Key location (change 12.0 to 11.0) and GPO location.

Disable all IRM in Office client
Location:HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\DRM
DWORD:Disable
Value:
0 - No functionality impacted by this regkey
1 - All IRM functionality is removed; IRM is disabled
Description:
This key can be used to disable all IRM functionality in the Office client. All IRM UI hooks are removed.
Exists in Office 11:Yes
Exists in Office 12:Yes
Can Be Set by GPO in Office 11:Yes
Can Be Set by GPO in Office 12:Yes
GPO Path and Name:
User Configuration\Microsoft Office 2007\Manage Restricted Permissions\Disable Information Rights Management User Interface

Disable creation of IRM content
Location:HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\DRM
DWORD:DisableCreation
Value:
If DisableCreation is non-zero, then an Enterprise Install will act just like a Standard install. Users cannot create IRM content or edit the rights on a doc, but they can consume previously created content.
Description:
This regkey makes a Enterprise Professional version of Office behavior like a Standard copy. In this state, users can consume rights managed content, but cannot create new managed content or edit the permissions on existing content.
Exists in Office 11:No
Exists in Office 12:Yes
Can Be Set by GPO in Office 11:No
Can Be Set by GPO in Office 12:Yes
GPO Path and Name:
User Configuration\Microsoft Office 2007\Manage Restricted Permissions\Prevent users from changing permissions on rights managed content.

Set whether a HTML version of doc is embedded into IRM content
Location:HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\DRM
DWORD:IncludeHTML
Value:
1 = Include HTML stream
0 = Do not include HTML stream
Description:
This regkey determines whether an HTML representation of the rights managed content is included in in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint rights managed documents. If the HTML stream is included, the file can then be viewed by the Rights Management Add-on for IE
Exists in Office 11:Yes
Exists in Office 12:Yes
Can Be Set by GPO in Office 11:Yes
Can Be Set by GPO in Office 12:Yes
GPO Path and Name:
User Configuration\Microsoft Office 2007\Manage Restricted Permissions\Allow Users With Earlier Version of Office to Read With Browsers
Notes:
In Office 11, this regkey simply sets the default value for the "Allow users with earlier version of Office . . ." checkbox. In Office 12, that checkbox has been removed. This is the only way to determine if the HTML stream is included. By default, Office 12 sets this regkey to 0.

Select whether to encrypt document properties for IRM content
Location:HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Security\
DWORD:DRMEncryptProperty
Value:
When this DWORD is set to 1, the metadata is encrypted. When set to 0, the metadata is stored in clear text. The default value is 0.
Description:
For Office "12's" new Office Open XML file formats (e.g. doxc, xlxx, pptx) users will have the ability to decide whether to encrypt the Office metadata stored inside an IRM protected "Metro" file. They can either encrypt all Office metadata (including hyperlink references) or leave it in the clear so other applications can access the data. Users make this choice by setting a registry key. Corporate IT departments can automatically set-up a default option within their organization using this registry setting.
Note that the choice is not granular: users either encrypt the entire metadata package or none of it. In addition, this registry setting does not determine whether other, non-Office client metadata storages - such as the special storage SharePoint creates - are encrypted. Finally, this choice does not apply to the Office 2003 or other previous file formats. Office "12" will handle these formats in the same manner as Office 2003.
Exists in Office 11:No
Exists in Office 12:Yes
Can Be Set by GPO in Office 11:No
Can Be Set by GPO in Office 12:Yes
GPO Path and Name:
User Configuration\Microsoft Office 2007\Security Settings\Protecting document metadata for rights managed Office Open XML Files.
Notes:
Only applies to Open XML Documents
Because all metadata properties are encrypted, SharePoint will be unable to promote/demote metadata from IRM documents created with this regkey set. Not only does this make the documents harder to find, it also leads to several issues. As such, if you want to set this regkey you should a) not be using SharePoint or b) use SharePoint, but only upload IRM documents to an IRM-enabled SharePoint document library (in which case, WSS can access the encrypted properties and will promote/demote them).

Set RMS Licensing URL
Location:HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\DRM
String:CorpLicenseServer
Value:URL of the licensing server
Description:
This setting allows the administrator to override the location of the Windows Rights Management Server specified in the Active Directory.
Exists in Office 11:Yes
Exists in Office 12:Yes
Can Be Set by GPO in Office 11:No
Can Be Set by GPO in Office 12:No
Notes:
Generally, this key is not used. The AD should specify the RMS server.

Set downlevel text for IRM email messages
Location:HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\DRM
String:DownlevelText
Value:The text that appears in the wrapper email.
Description:
Using this setting, users can set the text of the "wrapper" email message that is sent with their IRM email. This is the message that will appear when users via the IRM email in a non-IRM aware client. By default, this regkey is not present and the default message is sent: If you are not running an e-mail application that supports messages with restricted permission, such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or 2007, you can view this message by downloading the Rights Management Add-on for Microsoft Internet Explorer from http://r.office.microsoft.com/r/rlidRestrictedPermissionViewer?clid=1033." The CLID in the hyperlink is localized to the default language of the sender.

String:DownlevelTemplatePath
Value: The path to a directory that stores templates. Templates are just normal Office documents.
Description:

Leaving Google to get back to Microsoft

Here's a great article (http://1-800-magic.blogspot.com/2008/06/back-to-microsoft.html) of Sergey Solyanik who left Google and is back to Microsoft.  His views are rather interesting and you can found some below.

So why did I leave?
There are many things about Google that are not great, and merit improvement. There are plenty of silly politics, underperformance, inefficiencies and ineffectiveness, and things that are plain stupid. I will not write about these things here because they are immaterial. I did not leave because of them. No company has achieved the status of the perfect workplace, and no one ever will.

On the other hand, in my year at Google, I could not figure out what was it they were doing. The better manager that I had collected feedback from my peers and gave it to me. There was no other (observable by me) impact on Google. The worse manager that I had did not do even that, so for me as a manager he was a complete no-op. I asked quite a few other engineers from senior to senior staff levels that had spent far more time at Google than I, and they didn't know either. I am not making this up!

On the other hand, I was using Google software - a lot of it - in the last year, and slick as it is, there's just too much of it that is regularly broken. It seems like every week 10% of all the features are broken in one or the other browser. And it's a different 10% every week - the old bugs are getting fixed, the new ones introduced. This across Blogger, Gmail, Google Docs, Maps, and more.

Testing RMS without modifying the AD

These days I've been studying an RMS environment and I wanted to test some clients withouth having to create an SCP because I didn0t want that all the clients I had in my environment to connect to the RMS server. So there's a little trick you can useon your clients in order to have them connected to the RMS.

In Office 2007 applications, you can do the following registry trick, just create the keys.

Location:HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\DRM
String:CorpLicenseServer
Value:<
http://url.to.rms/_wmcs/Licensing>

Location:HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\DRM
String:CorpCertificationServer
Value:<
http://url.to.rms/_wmcs/Certification>

*NOTE* change the 12.0 to an 11.0 of you are using Office 2003 **

or these keys for global RMS supremacy on the machine:

Location:HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSDRM\ServiceLocation\Activation
Reg_Sz: default
Value:<
http://url.to.rms/_wmcs/Certification>

Location:HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSDRM\ServiceLocation\EnterprisePublishing
Reg_Sz: default
Value:<
http://url.to.rms/_wmcs/Licensing>

App-V Error 25120 and 0000C801 in Server 2008

I've been mounting a scenery with App-V on HyperV and Windows Server 2008... but as I were installing I got this error:

"Error 25120. The installation program was unable to create the required IIS Virtual Directory”

So it seems we have to install the IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility, IIS 6 Management Console and IIS Management Scripts and Tools in order to be able to install.. so by following the next steps, you should get the work done.

To install the IIS 6.0 Management Compatibility Components by using the Windows Server 2008 Server Manager

  1. Click Start, click Administrative Tools and then Server Manager.

  2. In the left navigation pane, expand Roles, and then right-click Web Server (IIS) and select Add Role Services.

  3. On the Select Role Services pane, scroll down to Management Tools and select IIS Management Scripts and Tools, then scroll down again to IIS 6 Management Compatibility.

  4. Select the check boxes for IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility and IIS 6 Management Console.

  5. Click Next from the Select Role Services pane, and then click Install at the Confirm Installations Selections pane.

  6. Click Close to leave the Add Role Services wizard.

iis7

But after this, when I got to the management console, I couldn't connect, I kept having this Error 0000C801. But again, I solved this issue by installing the Role of Windows Authentication in IIS7.

App-V 4.5 RC is out!

Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5 Release Candidate Availability!

A new release candidate for Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) is now available!!  Along with building new features, the team has been working hard to bring the product into compliance with Microsoft shipping standards.  TAP customers will be expanding their deployments to thousands of production users with this release to help validate the product’s full feature set, as well as performance and scalability.  Major highlights include:

· HTTP streaming. We now support streaming virtual applications from an IIS server (v6 or v7). This will provide dramatic performance and scalability improvements for customers with large App-V deployments.

· Re-designed Sequencer.  Simplifies the process and reduces the complexity of creating virtual application packages. There is now a single wizard for creating a new package and advanced settings have been put into an optional screen.

· Dynamic Suite Composition (DSC) for MSI packages allows the flexibility to control virtual application interaction. Administrators wanting to consolidate virtual environments, and enable faster, easier administration, can use the product’s Dynamic Suite Composition, which sequences and manages packages for middleware applications separately from the main application.

· Seamless integration with SCCM 2007 R2. Allows customers to easily deploy virtual applications through the SCCM 2007 R2 infrastructure and scale their deployments.
